What the most famous coconut oil study actually found
If your hair feels weak, frizzy or prone to breakage, you might assume you need a new product.
But in many cases, the issue is when you use it, not what you use.
Here’s what the research says about oiling your hair, and why timing matters more than you think.
Why wet hair needs protecting
Think of it this way:
- Dry hair is strong and holds its shape.
- Wet hair is at its weakest, like wet paper that tears when pulled.
Most everyday damage happens on wash day, while hair is wet and being shampooed, combed and towel dried.
The good news? A simple step before washing can help protect it.
What the study tested
In 2003, researchers published a study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science comparing three oils: coconut, sunflower and mineral oil.
They applied each oil to healthy and damaged hair, before or after washing, then measured how much protein the hair lost. Protein gives hair its strength, so less protein loss means less damage.
What they found
1. Only coconut oil reduced protein loss
Coconut oil was the only one of the three oils that noticeably reduced protein loss, in both healthy and damaged hair. Sunflower and mineral oil did not.
Why this happens: Coconut oil is mostly lauric acid, with small, straight molecules that can get inside the hair and bond with its proteins. Mineral oil stays on the surface.
2. Before washing worked best
The strongest results came when oil was applied before washing.
Why this happens: Oil applied first coats the strand, so less water floods in during the wash. Less swelling means less strain on the hair. Applied after washing, oil mostly stays on the surface.
3. It confirms an old ritual
Oiling hair the night before washing has been a tradition in many cultures for generations. This study suggests the order makes sense.
How to oil your hair before washing
- Apply oil or a mask to dry lengths and ends
- Leave it on for at least 20 minutes
- Wash and condition as usual
- Detangle gently with your fingers or a wide tooth comb, starting at the ends
Remember: healthy hair is built over time, not overnight.
Where the Hair Pudding fits
Hair oiling has been a ritual for generations, but it isn’t always easy to fit into real life. Pure oil can take more than one wash to rinse out, which not everyone has time for.
That’s why we made the Hair Pudding. It brings coconut oil together with mango butter and avocado in a cream that’s simpler to use. Apply it to dry hair for 20 minutes before washing, and rinse as usual.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to oil hair before or after washing?
According to this study, oiling before washing gave the strongest protection against protein loss.
How long should I leave oil in my hair before washing?
At least 20 minutes to an hour. Many people leave it overnight.
The Bottom Line
Wash day is when hair is most vulnerable. Oiling before you wash, not after, is a simple way to give it some protection.
Small changes to your routine can make a real difference, wash after wash.
